Liahona

Home School Support Group of Orange County

The Liahona Homeschool Support Group was started by Diane Hopkins in 1988 to provide an organized opportunity for Latter-day Saint homeschooling families in Orange County, California to meet together. Since that time, we have continued to meet every Wednesday for field trips, park days, and other activities.

Twice a month we have field trips. Some of the field trips we have done are tours of factories, nature hikes at regional parks and nature centers, museums, visits to navy vessels, the circus, tide pools, tours of local businesses such as fire stations, factories and stores and much more. We are also able to get group discounts - and some aren't available for individual families. In addition to field trips, we have gone roller skating, bowling, to IMAX Theater shows, school performances at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, and kite flying at the beach. We also do art projects, potluck lunches, science fairs, talent shows and craft days. In addition to these, we also do occasional service projects. Each year we have our traditional "Great Brain Day." On this day (which we plan in February to coincide with Valentines Day). For this, students share something they have been learning about in which they have become a "Great Brain." We follow this with decorating Valentine cookies and swapping Valentine cards. The weeks that field trips are not planned, we meet for park days. Moms compare experiences and share ideas while children play and enjoy their homeschooled friends. These days are very valuable!

Although we are predominately LDS, we do not have a "statement of faith" and anyone is welcome. Although most of the activities will be in Northern Orange County, you can live anywhere in the area. Annual dues are $20 per family, but those who plan a field trip get a $10 refund. Email Debbie Benjamin for more information or to join.

Liahona design by Rick Hopkins

"And now my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball or director - or our fathers called it Liahona, which is being interpreted, a compass, and the Lord prepared it... it did work for them according to their faith in God, therefore if they had faith to believe that God could cause that those spindles should point the way they should go, behold it was done; therefore they had this miracle and also many other miracles wrought by the power of God."
