We are always disappointed when a facility no longer gives tours to homeschoolers. I don't really
know the particular reasons, but I have a few suspicions. Here are some guidelines to use when
you go on a field trip, so that we will all be welcome and appreciated.
- Give the facility an accurate count
The docents could be overwhelmed if there's a lot more people than expected. On the other hand,
if the number of attendees is a lot less than expected, perhaps they wouldn't need as many docents, and
we have wasted their time.
- Arrive together and on time
It can be frustrating, annoying, and distracting when we get there late, especially if some people
arrive after the presentation has begun. Schedule your group to meet at the facility 15-30 minutes
prior to the expected time and go in as one group.
- Be respectful
Let's remember that these places might be accustomed to schools coming in straight lines and
not speaking out of turn. Perhaps what we view as our children
happily exploring and freely thinking outside the box (classroom),
may be seen to others as a group of wild chimpanzees!
We need to be more respectful of the people and places we visit.
- Obey all rules
Be sure you know where your children are at all times so that you can correct them when necessary.
Be firm. Help other moms, if necessary.
Some of these places have animals that should not be disturbed, or antiques that are irreplaceable.
- Listen while the docent is talking
Even if a child is bored, they should still show respect for the speaker. As parents, we could do better as well.
Sometimes we have so much fun with our friends, we stand in the back and talk!
- Ask intelligent questions
The docents love it when the children show their interest by asking relevant questions.
You may want to do a unit on the subject prior to the field trip. The children are more likely to
enjoy the lecture
and participate in the discussion if they are familiar with the topic.
