OLIVER (age 10):
"What I did and liked about France". On my
trip to France I got to use my French a lot. I saw many different
monuments. My favorite part of the trip was seeing the Eiffel Tower
at night. The Eiffel Tower was closed at the third level but you could
go to the second. I still use my French to talk with my mom and my
brother. In France they have very small cars. The French money was
sort of like ours but they called it 'Euros'. The concerts were very
entertaining for the listeners. I had fun playing the concerts. It was
very nice going to France and I would definitely go again.
NICHOLAS (age 12):
Our concert tour to France was amazing! I
saw so many things that I never thought I would see. We had three
concerts in Nice, Cannes, and Monaco. I have been learning French for
2 years and it really helped with communication. Some of the sights
we saw included: The Eiffel Tower, L'Arc
de Triumph, and Notre Dame. We got to go on a boat tour on the Seine
River to see more sights of Paris. This trip will always be a milestone
in my life.
Jennifer Walton:
Our homeschool orchestra concert tour to France and Monaco in 2002 was
really a thrill. This homeschool orchestra, now known as SCALE (Southern
California Alternative Learner's Ensemble) combined with Musique Sur La
Mer; another youth orchestra in Los Alamitos. This group is also
conducted by a homeschool mom named Marcy Sudock.
Our combined orchestras had 29 musicians performing (kids and adults)
and 29 other family members who went along for the tour. The vast
majority of those who went on the tour were whole families who wanted
to share the wonderful experience of traveling and performing abroad.
Two of our performances were in Nice and Cannes, France. our third
concert was at the beautiful Cathedral in Monaco, with acoustics so
grand, that the impression will last us all a lifetime.
The children and adults who performed did a wonderful job of being
ready for the concerts by bringing their music stands, music,
instruments, and wearing their uniforms. They were also quiet and
respectful of the beautiful performance venues. They behaved extremely
well throughout the entire tour and were real 'troopers'.
For more information about Musique Sur La Mer youth orchestra,
which does allow parent participation just like SCALE, and is very
homeschool friendly, please contact Marcy Sudock at
sudock@earthlink.net or call her at (562) 799-1060. Her orchestra
meets Monday evenings 7-8:30, in Los Alamitos, just off the 605 at
Katella.
An audition is required prior to membership.
For more information about the Homeschool Orchestra (SCALE), please
contact Jennifer Walton at ViolinWalton@aol.com or call her at
(562) 989-1523. We rehearse every other Tuesday, from 1-2:30, in the
city of Cypress and there is no audition requirement. Private lessons
are strongly recommended. Come hear us play!
