California TaeKwonDo Center
Here's what has been said about California TaeKwonDo Center:
"I have been thrilled with my family's involvement at
California
TaeKwonDo Center. Like many home schooling parents, I was initially
skeptical of martial arts. I thought it was all about learning to
fight - boy, was I wrong! By studying TaeKwonDo, my children are not
just practicing martial art techniques. They are learning the
importance of goal setting, courtesy, perseverance, and respect for
themselves and others. Not only does TaeKwonDo provide a fabulous,
full body exercise, but it also gives my children a huge sense of
pride in their progress. I've seen their self-esteems soar as they
work for and earn their belt ranks. They've made many friends at
the center and find the classes interesting and fun. I highly
recommend California TaeKwonDo Center to other home schooling
families who are looking for a positive, educational physical
fitness program."

FINE ART CLASSES FOR CHILDREN
By Jan Wood

email:reelceltic@yahoo.com
Web site: www.kidsfineartclasses.com
Based in Mission Viejo, Jan has been teaching art out of her home
for the past 6 years. Most of her students are homeschooled.
Her teaching style is relaxed yet focused. She wants the kids to feel
no pressure to “get it right” so to speak, yet, she wants them to
embrace and understand the techniques needed to draw
objects, landscapes, portraits, animals, etc. in a way that brings a
certain realism to their art. Then, from that point of understanding,
the freedom & creativity to develop their own style. She
reinforces the elements of composition, and basic drawing techniques,
all in an atmosphere of creative freedom and fun!
KidsArt

starting at age 4. With over 16 years of teaching experience,

Art Classes for Children
Terry has taught art in high school, middle school and elementary school
and now teaches from her home located on the border of Orange and Tustin.
Her philosophy is to teach drawing techniques first and than work with
color. Students learn to draw faces/people in proportion and objects
in three dimension. Composition, value, color theory, etc. are taught
as well as a monthly session on Art Masters. All materials are
supplied and included in the cost of classes. The method of teaching
guides children into comparing to themselves and not to the others in
the class. For more information contact Terry at

You will all learn practical organization techniques which can help you get those photos out of boxes and off of hard drives. Not only does creating an "All About Me" Album instill a great sense of self, it gives us as parents a chance to complete their childhood albums with their help. They also love helping with any backlog and learning about their family history. Contact Sabrina for current schedule or to schedule a presentation for you or your group.

Hoops and Art
Matt Beeuwsaert is a homeschool dad, retired professional basketball player, and self-published comic strip book author/artist living in O.C. After 12 years in Europe, Matt would now like to share his knowledge of both basketball and art with homeschoolers by offering a class for all ages which combines 1 hour of basketball fundamentals and 1 hour of comic strip drawing! It's great because the kids get to develop both their creative and physical sides all at once! And you do not need to be a great artist to be a great cartoonist, and the same goes for basketball. The idea is just to learn the basics of the game, have fun, and stay active. Please contact Matt at mattbeez@cox.net or phone 949-547-5944 if interested, including the age/sex/and city of the child.

KNITTING FOR HOMESCHOOLERS – nurture your child’s brain development
while they’re having fun!
Children who participate in hobbies such as knitting that engage both
hands in a variety of movements lay a concrete neural foundation for the
symbolic thinking that is needed later for mathematics and abstract
reasoning. The rhythmic movement of the yarn through the fingers
provides gentle sensory stimulation that is soothing and satisfying as
the children gradually experience the sense of accomplishment that comes
with making something beautiful from start to finish.
Lenore Dunn has taught Handwork (knitting, crocheting, and sewing) in a
charter school as well as classes for homeschoolers in grades 1-8. She
enjoys helping children of all abilities to express their unique
creativity while making something they will always treasure. Crochet and
intermediate knitting classes are also available for students who have
learned the basic (garter stitch) techniques.
Group and individual classes are available year-round, flexible schedule
in Lake Forest or surrounding areas. For more information,
or if you have any questions, please call Lenore Dunn at 949-273-8582.
DRAWING and PAINTING Lessons with Joan Corman at her Laguna art studio in Laguna Beach
Joan Corman's goal is to stimulate artistic growth and careful observation. She shows eyes to see and hands to render the intricate play of light and shadows as they appear on the simple five basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube and pyramid) in a light controlled environment. Each class begins with a structured drawing lesson. Introduction lessons in color theory, perspective and brush techniques take place while students work on a painting of their choice. Everyone learns to mix secondary and tertiary colors (grays) from a limited primary color palette. Artistic experimentation and creative expression are encouraged to inspire a lasting joy and appreciation of all art. Art classes take place in her Laguna Art Studio (a charming cottage in north Laguna Beach). Please call (949) 494-1815 or email lagunaartstudio@gmail.com and/or visit www.JoanCorman.com
Gloria Gales, Children's Art Instructor
Gloria has been an art dealer and art instructor for young people since 1984. Her philosophy is that first one must discover what type of imagery they prefer to create, and then what type of medium they prefer; watercolor landscapes, acrylic portraits, pencil sketching, whatever. After they discover this, then they can work toward improving their skills. The more they create what they like, and how they like to do it, the more confident they will become, and the more they enjoy and understand art.
Private drawing lessons for children and young adults. Your location in South Orange County. $80 per class, 8 children maximum. Classes are 1 hour. Flexible appointments, call Gloria Gales at 949-689-2047

Homeschool History Classes
Make history more interactive with a dynamic diorama. St. Crispin's Irregulars is a history based hobby group in Anaheim that meets on the second Saturday of every month at the Knights of Columbus hall in Anaheim. Most of the regulars are military veterans who recreate a wide variety of historical battles in miniature for study and fun. The ages of the participants range from 10 to 60 and there is usually 55-65 attendees. In the past they have recreated Julius Caesar's invasion of Brittan, The Battle of the Bulge, Gettysburg and battles from the Napoleonic age. You would be hard pressed to find an Irregular who was a bad history student, and a few of the regulars actually teach the subject! They are always looking for inspiration so if your home school students are covering World War One, for example, a Saturday outing that reinforces the lesson might help to make the information more real. Tell them what you are studying and they can see how we can expand on the lesson. Feel free to stop by or contact Harmon Ward at 714-414-2749 if you would like to arrange a more formal teaching event or would like to be added to our newsletter mailing list. The Knights of Columbus Hall in Anaheim is at 1127 North Anaheim Blvd. Anaheim. Hobby Day is from 9:00am until 9:30pm on the second Saturday of every month, and usually on the Friday night before that. In addition, we are now opne every Monday night from 6:00pm until 11:30 pm. There is no admission charge.

Decimals Workshop
Linda Popenhagen, an elementary math specialist, is well-acquainted
with the fact that students learn in different ways. Sometimes, it is
difficult for public schools, let alone homeschool families, to purchase and
utilize all the hands-on materials that help in math.
Most schools cut back on manipulatives after third grade. Yet,
tactile and visual learners still need the opportunity to touch and visualize
as they learn place value names. Linda has visual, 3-D models that demonstrate the relationship of whole
numbers and decimals at the same time. Such models require
a lot of storage space, so most school don't have them. Linda is offering fun and meaningful ways to learn place value and see their
actual size differences from ten thousands through thousandths.
(Ex. 68,342.795) Students come to understand that the decimal point is
almost a math Superhero. Her workshops conclude with a review of material
covered by embedding the concepts into game formats.
A workshop for the place value project will need a large meeting hall
or a warm breeze in order to use a public park.
Call Linda @ 1-714-871-9001 or email: LPopenhage@aol.com
Other workshops are in the planning stages. You may request other
workshop topics as well.
