Here are some individals who were homeschooled and lived to tell about it!
My name is Jaime Jenkins. I was homeschooled from 2nd grade
until I went to college at the age of 15. My mother had two
main reasons for homeschooling me. One, she felt that the
school's curriculum was not challenging enough, and two,
she didn't like the school environment. My favorite part of
being homeschooled was the flexibility of our daily
schedule and the curriculum. I did miss the interaction
with other children sometimes, which is why I think the
Liahona group is such a wonderful idea. Being homeschooled
not only gave me many options, but provided a great bond
for me with my immediate family.
My name is Jennie (O'Reilly) Sheperd. I started homeschooling when I was
in sixth grade. I didn't know of any other
homeschooler my age. I was fortunate to be hometaught
however, because shortly after I left public school we moved many times
and to several different states. Acclamating to a new school each time
would have been very difficult. When I lived in Oregon I attended
elective classes at Ashland High School and graduated a year ahead
of my peers. I live in Arizona now. For eight years I was the Office
Manager of a Dental office before I quit to be a mom. I have been
married for five years, and my husband and I are adopting a baby and
"fostering" a four year old and eight year old. All three beautiful
girls. We have a bit of a farm, with horses, dogs and an assortment
of other types of creatures. It's very different than
my Orange County upbringing but I love it. Homeschooling allowed me
the time and flexibility to study and research what I really loved and
now my life is all that I hoped it would be.
My name is Cherish DeLosie (soon-to-be Weinstock).
I was homeschooled from age 2 1/2 until I moved on.... first to
unschooling and then to work/college. Some people say homeschoolers
aren't prepared for the real world, but the truth is we live in the
real world all our lives, interacting with all ages and types of people.
I never participated in a formal homeschooling group and I'm sure that
would be a wonderful way to share interests, knowledge, and resources,
while learning social skills. Perhaps my kids will take part in the
Liahona group! I am a staunch supporter of home/un-schooling. I read
at age 3, I was able to read (not understand) college level at age 4, at
age 5 I had a 5th grade comprehension level. Occasionally people tell
me this happened because I'm a "genius." I tell them homeschooling
creates geniuses. My entire outlook on life is fresher and more full
of excitement to learn, and I never had the antagonism toward my
parents so many public-schooled teenagers do.

I grew up in Huntington Beach and was homeschooled from K-12 before attending West Point. After West Point I went to Military Police School in Missouri and was commissioned as a police officer in the Army. I am currently a Captain and am serving as the Anti-terrorism Officer (ATO) for my unit stationed in Alaska. I am working on a Master's in Christian Apologetics through BIOLA's modular program, and will have graduated from the program in Spring '08.
Nicole Simons
I was homeschooled for several years before attending California Academy of Mathematics and Science, and California State University Long Beach. I am a CSULB alumni and currently attending graduate school in communication studies. I am working on a project where I am examining if there is a link between homeschooling and communication competence.
I'd like to put more homeschool "graduates" here. If you or someone was homechooled
and would like to share their experiences, please
let me know!
