Defense of Freedom, a non-profit foundation, operates a 122-foot tall-ship in Newport harbor. The entire focus is children and teaching students American History in an enjoyable, interactive way. They can offer a 3-hour sailing outing or a CA state standards based class. Both are very affordable and fun for all. The wonderful interactive 3-hour sailing program teaches American History and what it was like to be a sailor in 19th century America. Children of all ages enjoy taking part in raising sails, steering the ship and watching the crew fire the cannons. At $30.00 per person, it's a real bargain.

Rev. Gary Beard (known to many as a George Washington re-enactor) has graciously transformed a portion of his home into a hands-on history museum. His mission is to show this space to as many school aged children as possible. Rev. Beard has brought together many artifacts of our country’s history into one beautiful space. He has items such as books, original coins, and a collection of clothing that are over 100 years old. Alternate Routes Woodworking
Alternate Routes is Side Street Projects’ creative woodworking program for kids age 5 to 11. Since 1997, Alternate Routes has brought the lost art of woodworking to literally thousands of children throughout LA County. Alternate Routes’ goal is to teach children how to use tools safely, effectively and (ultimately) independent of adult assistance. Classes are held in brightly colored mobile classrooms: renovated transit buses that house 10 woodworking stations custom made for children. Each station is equipped with hand tools, adjustable workbenches, supplies and materials: everything needed to create a multitude of woodworking projects. There are two artist-teachers per bus, providing an impressive 5:1 student/teacher ratio at all times.
